I just wanted to congratulate all of you who participated in the 4-week weight loss challenge. If you are new to this list, you can go to my website at http://www.fatproof.net, click on newsletter and sort through the archives of the last few newsletters so that you know what I’m talking about.
I also wanted to thank all of you for your kind words about the birth of my daughter, Ashlyn Grace Kersting. Baby, mom, big brother Matthew and dad are all doing well.
1. WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE: Final Result
Congratulations Melissa Sarventino from Roanoke Virginia. She is the winner of the weight loss challenge, having lost 16 pounds in just 4 weeks. Way to go! She will take home two weight-loss CD’s, a free, a signed copy of my book when it comes out and possibly a guest appearance with me on national television. It looks like I’m going be a guest on FOX’s new, live, national morning show in April. The show will be launched in January and will be hosted by Julliette Huddy and Mike Jerrick of FOX’s “Dayside”.
2. SUCCESS STORIES FROM THE COUNSELORS OFFICE
A man I had seen several months ago to help quit smoking called me last week. This was the first time I heard from him since the session. It turns out that he hasn’t touched a cigarette since that session. He told me that when he left my office that day that he had a pack of cigarettes in his car and was surprised to find himself crumple it up and toss it in the trash. He also told me that every time he sees a cigarette, he salivates but not because he wants a cigarette, because he wants a drink of water. I went back to my notes and sure enough, during his session, I repeated over and over again that every time he thinks about a cigarette he would immediately crave an icy bottle of spring water. Sure enough, the salivate command stuck. Pretty Pavlovian indeed.
Anyway, this gentleman called because he was now ready to work on losing weight, and trust me, because he was so successful with the smoking and is now a big believer in the power of the mind, anything is possible.
3. BOOK NEWS
No news on the weight loss book. I’m just waiting for the new title and cover. I’ll keep you posted.
I just completed the proposal for my next book, which will be about stress. My agent will be presenting the proposal to McGraw Hill.
4. OTHER NEWS
I recently developed a new seminar for parents called S.O.S (Stressed Out Students). I have been targeting school parent groups and have had a tremendous response from the communities I’ve presented to thus far. I will be presenting tonight at 7:30 P.M. at Indian Hills High School in Oakland New Jersey. The things I will cover include:
∑ Why there is so much stress and pressure to perform
∑ How technology has taken over our kids lives
∑ A look at the food industry and the eating habits of Children
∑ Why more kids today are medicated than ever before
∑ Drinking and Drugs: yes it’s part of the equation
∑ Where do parents go from here?

Stress Eating: Under Stress, We Say Yes!
By: Carol Solomon
Last weekend, I went to a coaching conference in Washington D.C.
While I was there, I had very little hunger. As a result, I didn’t eat very much the entire weekend.
As I thought back on the weekend, I wondered why I had eaten so little. I had few urges to eat and rarely even thought about food.
I considered the fact that I was very busy having a lot of FUN. I was with a wonderful group of coaches, learning and socializing together all weekend long. On Saturday, we went to see the cherry blossoms in the city.
Saturday night was purely social – I even got talked into doing karaoke.
Yes, me -- “Stop in The Name of Love” may never sound the same again! :-)
But I don’t think those factors really made the difference, because I keep very busy here at home, and I can create fun anytime I want to.
The really important factor seemed to be more about what was NOT there during the weekend – factors such as phones, faxes, email, hungry children, dirty laundry, dishes piled in the sink, and a dog that pesters me to go walking (not a bad thing!)
Demands, responsibilities, stress – all zapped out with one simple plane flight!
It’s not that I would change my life in any extreme way, but it sure is nice to extract the stress and see what is there.
It reminded me of a saying I once heard “under stress we say yes!”
It’s the self-talk I didn’t hear . . .
“I’ll just have _______, then I will be able to ________.”
And the constant demands and responsibilities, all by my own choosing, "Mom, can you _________? "Honey, would you mind ________? "If I can just get these last few chapters written . . ."
I realize that I can recreate that stress-free feeling by doing kind things and taking more time for me.
I tend to work too hard, and can feel overwhelmed trying to meet all the demands.
I can be more intentional about decreasing stress, setting more boundaries and counteracting stress with fun activities and social time.
I don't know anything that will increase stress more than failure to set boundaries.
A break from all those responsibilites and demands sure makes life look a lot clearer.
How about you? Are you taking enough time for you? What can you subtract in your life to feel less stressed?
Here’s to seeing cherry blossoms more often!

7. QUOTE OF THE WEEK
If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?
